1980

With brother John he writes songs and puts together his first recording studio. The Kaywell Brothers Band plays Los Angeles and tours Southwestern United States.

1982

With computer graphics design wizard Dale Herigstad, Jerry forms HK Sound, composing and producing music for television and film. At work in their state-of-the-art digital music studios in Los Angeles, he and his partner will win several prestigious awards for their work over the next 7 years. Jerry will serve as a Clio Award judge for three of these years.

1984

Jerry takes a soul-searching break from his Hollywood career. After a five-month solitary pilgrimage including Lourdes, Avila, Assisi, Patmos and 30 days in the Holy Land, he is convinced he is called to the priesthood. He returns home to Santa Monica, California to discover he is diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. He begins chemotherapy and attends group sessions at The Wellness Community along with Gilda Radner and Gene Wilder.

1986

Jerry records with the vocal group The Winans on the album Let My People Go. This work earns him a Grammy Award for Gospel Album of the Year. He donates his musical talents to St. Monica Parish in Santa Monica, California. He learns the art of meditation, using guided imagery tapes. Later in the year his mother, Grace Kaywell, is killed in an automobile accident. He attends daily Mass and vows to become a Diocesan priest if his health allows.

1987

Spontaneous remission from lymphoma. Dr. Clifford Ossorio of Cedars of Sinai Hospital, Beverly Hills, California, tells him; "Do whatever you really want to do with the rest of your life . . . and don't wait!"

1989

Returns to his native Florida to continue studies for the priesthood. He is musical director at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach, Florida.
